The CCA standards and breeder Code of Ethics have now been in place on the website for some time. For many years, Lt/Col Mary D. Foley, USA (ret), researched and found breeders all over the nation to try to accommodate the many calls that she got from clients from states outside of California. As a 17 year breeder and Founder of the Cockapoo Club of America, she provided a free referral service for these breeders.

The CCA has developed a "star system" of rating breeders with several measurable criteria. Breeders will be expected to provide proof of their statements to the CCA office i.e., copies of AKC papers and CERF certificate, OFA patellar luxation, elbow and hip certificates.  They will also need to show proof that they are starting to develop beyond the 1st generation.

Breeders who do not respond, will not be given a Star Rating, and will not be listed on the CCA Website.

**BREEDERS WHO SUBMIT AKC DOCUMENTS, OFA PATELLAR LUXATION & CERF DOCUMENTS FOR ALL THEIR BREED DOGS   TO THE CCA OFFICE, WILL RECEIVE A FREE LISTING AND A FREE MINI WEBSITE LINKED TO THEIR LISTING ON THE CCA WEBSITE'S STAR RATED BREEDER PAGE.

The CCA Breeder Star Rating system is designed as an incentive program to give specific quality guidelines to identify and bring recognition to breeders who aspire to the goals and purposes of the CCA.  Here we identify specific criterion providing a star reward system for breeders, and a tangible way for a puppy purchaser to find a breeder who will meet their needs.  Below are the qualifications to earn stars and a list of Star Rated Breeders will follow.  

Each breeders situation is unique to the breeding stock they own and that can vary from litter to litter depending upon which dam and sire are used.  The star rating given below is based upon the information the breeder submitted to the CCA office for qualification.  The Star Rating System was designed to help provide guidelines and encourage breeders to earn as many stars as they wish based upon what they feel is important in their breeding program.  The flexibility allows for individual differences among stock and values of individual breeders.  The star rating of each breeder can be updated according to new qualifications recently met as soon as the documentation is submitted to the CCA office.

Keep in mind the goal of the CCA is to breed down the generations of unrelated AKC provable American Cockapoos™ to establish the American Cockapoos™ as a breed keeping good ethics, health and temperament first and foremost.

BREEDER STAR RATINGS

Following are the criteria to qualify for the various star ratings.  Add up all that apply to a specific breeders individual stock.  A list of star rated breeders and the items they qualify for will follow.

1 STAR  Breeding to the established standard and have signed and observe the Breeder Code of Ethics. Have acceptable environments for their dogs and pups, and welcome site visits by CCA officials.

1 STAR  Breeding AKC clear registered American Cocker Spaniel or AKC clear registered English Cocker Spaniel to AKC clear registered Poodle producing 1st generation American Cockapoos™ or English Cockapoos™.  AKC documents on file with the CCA office.  3 generation pedigrees on file with the CCA office.  

1 STAR  All breed dogs are registered with the Canine Eye Registration Foundation (CERF) annually, and only dogs with normal CERF results are bred.  CERF documents on file with the CCA office.

1 STAR  All breed dogs certified free of genetic patellar luxation by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA).  (Animal must be one year of age at the time of exam).  OFA documents on file with the CCA office.

1 STAR  (OPTIONAL)  All breed dogs certified free of elbow problems by OFA (animal must be two years old at the time of exam).  OFA documents on file with the CCA office.

1 STAR  (OPTIONAL)  All breed dogs certified free of hip dysplasia by OFA (animal must be two years old at the time of exam).  OFA documents on file with the CCA office.

1 STAR  (OPTIONAL)  All breed dogs DNA tested for proof of parentage. 

2 STARS  Using AKC provable stock, producing 2nd generation American Cockapoos™ or English Cockapoos™.  3 generation pedigrees on file with the CCA office tracing back to the original breeds.

3 STARS  Using AKC provable stock, producing 3rd generation American Cockapoos™ or English Cockapoos™.  4 generation pedigrees on file with the CCA office tracing back to the original breeds.

4 STARS  Using AKC provable stock, producing 4th generation or beyond American Cockapoos™ or English Cockapoos™.  5 generation pedigrees on file with the CCA office tracing back to the original breeds.

IMPORTANT  Please note that for the Cockapoo Club of America's meticulous record keeping, all generations will be recorded one generation higher than the lowest generation American Cockapoos™ or English Cockapoos™ bred.  For example a 1st generation American Cockapoos™ or English Cockapoos™ bred with a 3rd generation Cockapoo will produce a 2nd generation American Cockapoos™ or English Cockapoos™, not a 4th generation American Cockapoos™ or English Cockapoos™.  

No limited AKC Registrations will be recognized.  Only dogs with clear AKC registration papers may be considered for American Cockapoos™ or English Cockapoos™.

For clarification: The number of stars a breeder can accumulate for breeding down the generations of AKC registration provable American Cockapoos™ is the number of the highest generation of American Cockapoos™ produced.  For example if a breeder produces first, second and third generation Cockapoos she/he would get 3 stars for breeding to the third generation total, for that part of the star rating, plus any other stars she/he would qualify for.

STAR RATED BREEDERS

PLEASE NOTE:  THE PURPOSE OF THE CCA IS TO EDUCATE BOTH THE BREEDER AND THE CONSUMER TO RAISE THE BREED STANDARD OF THE American Cockapoos™ AND THE ENGLISH COCKAPOO™.  IT IS THE CONSUMERS RESPONSIBILITY TO VERIFY AKC, OFA PATELLAR LUXATION CERTIFICATION AND ANNUAL CERF EXAM PAPERWORK WITH THE INDIVIDUAL BREEDER.  IF THE DATE OF THE LAST CERF EXAM IS NOT WITHIN 12 MONTHS OF THE DATE OF PURCHASE OF YOUR PUPPY, REFUSE TO BUY THE PUPPY UNTIL THE CERF EXAM IS UP TO DATE.  THE CCA DOES NOT HAVE THE MAN/WOMAN POWER TO VERIFY THAT ALL CERF'S ARE KEPT UP TO DATE ON ALL DOGS WITH ALL BREEDERS ANNUALLY.  ALSO, PERMANENT IDENTIFICATION OF THE PARENT DOGS SUCH AS A MICROCHIP, DNA TESTING, OR TATTOO IS ADVISABLE TO PROVE THAT THE PAPERWORK APPLIES TO THE DOG THE BREEDER IS REPRESENTING THAT IT DOES.  THE CCA CANNOT ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR LACK OF APPROPRIATE PAPERWORK AND OR CERTIFICATION FROM THE BREEDER.   IF THE BREEDER CANNOT PRODUCE SUFFICIENT DOCUMENTATION, THE CCA RECOMMENDS THAT THE CONSUMER REFUSE TO PURCHASE THE PUPPY AND NOTIFY THE CCA.  IT IS THE BREEDERS RESPONSIBILITY TO UPDATE PAPERWORK IN THE CCA OFFICE ON AN ANNUAL BASIS ON ALL OF HIS/HER BREED DOGS AND TO KEEP ANNUAL CERF EXAM PAPERWORK UPDATED OR LOSE THEIR STAR RATING.
