Tianna's Second Litter is Here!!!

Tianna is a CCA Five Star Rated Dam.  She is a first generation American Cockapoo who is AKC provable, CERF certified annually and found to be free of genetic eye disease, and OFA certified to be free of genetic patellar luxation.  The sire we used for this litter "Toby Clause Anderson" is also a first generation American Cockapoo who is AKC provable, CERF certified annually and OFA certified to be free of genetic patellar luxation. Tianna is four years old and this is her second litter.  Tianna has a wonderful gentle temperament.

Tianna loves our kitten Tiffany.

Tianna loves it when Josie's Cadette Girl Scout Troop comes over.  She likes the girls to hold her belly up like a baby and pass her around their friendship circle for belly rubs.  She wags her tail and gives kisses to each girl on her way around the circle.  Tianna lives inside our home and sleeps on our bed with us.  Many times she shares our pillow.  Shhhhh!!! Don't tell anyone!  Tianna lives a privileged life and we would like the same for her puppies (our Grandpuppies).  We feed Tianna Eukanuba dry dog food because we believe she deserves the best in a high quality diet.

Because we consider our puppies to be our Grandpuppies they are raised with meticulous care and concern.  Tianna and Trapper Brown the stud of the first litter both received a clear bill of health from their veterinarians before they were bred.  We use Dr. Steve Rosenstein of Agoura Westlake Animal Hospital (818-707-3030) for Tianna.  The whelping of the puppies is supervised and we try never to leave Tianna unattended during the first few weeks after the birth of the puppies.  This is a critical period.  The babies cannot regulate their body temperature so they need to be kept warm and on the side of mom where the gravy train is.  If one puppy wanders off from the rest or gets too far away from his/her food source that can spell disaster.  So, we carefully monitor to make sure all are together in a warm nest with Mom.  The puppies are kept inside our home.  During the day they stay in our family room where Josie is busy caring for them.  She keeps outings at a bare minimum to be home with the litter.  At night Tianna and babies come up to our bedroom and sleep right next to Josie's side of the bed where I turn on a light every hour or two and account for everyone.

We feel a bit like we have quintuplets when Tianna has puppies.  Josie is up several times in the night with Tianna and the puppies, we have dark circles under our eyes from lack of sleep, and huge grins on our faces from the wonder and joy of the experience.  Each puppy is weighed in daily to make sure they are getting enough to eat and learning to latch on effectively to mom.  We carefully, and gently socialize each tiny bundle of joy from the moment it is born.  At first only Josie gently handles the puppies cradling them belly up, touching their tiny paws, stroking their soft warm fur, kissing their velvet noses, and getting them ready for their calling in life, to be the perfect companion pet for you and your family.  When the puppies are mobile, our three children ages 16, 12 and 9 help with the socialization process getting the puppies used to being handled by boys, and girls in a gentle appropriate manner.  We take the puppies to the vet during the first 24 hours to have each one checked and Tianna has her postpartum check too.  We take them back to our licensed veterinarian again, to have their dew claws removed between 3 and 5 days old.   Their tails are left ON according to the CCA standard.  We give them their shots and worming according to our vets recommended schedule.  At six weeks we again take them in for a vet check to be sure everyone is healthy and to receive their first shot.

By six or seven weeks, we ask our new families to bring a crate to our home so that we can teach the puppy to adapt to sleeping in a crate by himself or herself so that he/she will sleep through the night in their new home and not howl about missing Mom and littermates all night.  In that crate we put a receiving blanket that the new family has slept with for a night or two, to get the puppy used to their new family's scent.  At first this is a very noisy process for the new crew and we have a howl fiesta the first few nights.  At eight weeks, our Grandpuppies are ready to go to their new homes and they snuggle down in their crate with their receiving blanket, and toys that smell like their litter and gently doze off into dreamland in their crate that is their 'home away from home'.

We keep in contact with our families to make the transition easier for both the puppy and the new family.  The new home needs to be puppy proofed.  Josie can give you detailed information on several ways to do that effectively.

We like to see our Grandpuppies grow up, so we offer a puppy sitting service.  The puppy can come home to visit Mom & Grandma while you travel.  You don't have to worry about kennel cough or fleas here, and when the puppies are potty trained...well they sleep on our beds at night too.  Our American Cockapoos (Aunt Tessy, and Aunt Traci)  love to see the babies come home for a visit.

Tianna's Second Litter

Thank you for your amazing interest and support!

Tianna's second litter arrived four days early on December 20, 2003.  Tianna's normal 15 pound weight was up to 20.2 pounds and her normal 16 inch waistline was a bounding 23 1/2.  Tianna looked like a watermelon with legs and I know from her waddle that she felt like it too, bless her heart!

tiannafullterm.jpg (53460 bytes)
Tianna full term huge belly up!

(Note her fancy "maternity cut" (shaved belly) that allows the puppies to find their food source easily, helps to keep her cooler, cleaner, and more comfortable when the puppies are born.)

I made an appointment with our breeding vet Dr. Dana Bleifer & Dr. Terrie Johnson of Warner Center Pet Clinic (818-710-8528) to have Tianna X-rayed at 59 days gestation to see how many puppies there were, so I could be prepared for her delivery.  Tianna was so huge and uncomfortable I moved the appointment up three days.  Lucky thing.  Tianna's temperature dropped on Friday 12/19/03  a sign that she would be delivering within 24 hours.  Her exam appointment was Saturday 12/20/03 at 11:00am.  Dr. Johnson said Tianna had six puppies.  The puppies were bigger than the puppies in her first litter.  We were able to compare the x-rays from the first and second litter and Dr. Johnson said that if she had a natural delivery, it would be close as to whether the largest pup would be able to fit without a c-section.  We begin to pray for a safe natural delivery.

Tianna's Whelping (Birthing)

Back at home, Saturday 12/20/03 at 3:40pm Tianna's first puppy was born into Josie's hands.  It was a beautiful buff female with a white heart blaze on her forehead and four white paws, she has a tiny white dip stick on the tip of her buff tail and white on her chest.  She has a curly coat.  She came into the world easily and nursed with gusto and enthusiasm weighing in at 7.8 ounces (.4ounces bigger than the largest puppy of the first litter).  Tianna was excited to see her and licked her with affection.

One hour later the second puppy hadn't come yet.  I thought about Dr. Johnson's words a few hours earlier, about it being a tight fit for the largest puppy in the litter.  She warned about going longer than an hour between puppies.  I begin to pray aloud for assistance with what I suspected was the largest puppy in the litter.  I made a phone call to my mentor and close friend CCA Five Star Rated Breeder Debbie Cowdrey asking for her opinion and thoughts.  Debbie's calm voice reassured me that when the puppy is large it takes more time.  Tianna wasn't in distress.  She was working hard in labor but wasn't panting too hard or pushing without results yet.  She encouraged me to wait a little longer.  Sixteen minutes later at 4:56pm the largest black boy was born.  He weighed 8.9 ounces.  He is solid black for the most part with white on his chin, a tiny bit on his neck, his chest and a little white on the bottoms of all four paw pads.   It took several pushes but he was born alert and when I put his tiny nose up to my ear to listen for fluid in his lungs he begin to suck on my ear the little rascal!  He must get that from the poodle side!  Tianna had made it through the largest hurdle, I gave thanks and felt confident she would make it through the rest with ease.

Tianna's third puppy came into the world at 5:09pm.  She is beautiful black with white on her nose and chin, a white strip under her neck and chest, and a pink nose that is slowly turning black.  She weighed in at 7.5 ounces.  She was happy to see her momma.  It is amazing how well they can find their food source and Mom especially since they are born not being able to see or hear with their eyes and ears sealed closed for the first 10 to 14 days.

The fourth puppy was born at 5:55pm and weighed in at 7.2 ounces.  He is a beautiful buff and white male that almost perfectly matches the buff female in markings, with a white heart shaped blaze on his forehead, white paws and a white chest.  His tail is solid buff with no white dip stick.  Which makes it easier for us to tell them apart from a top view.

The fifth puppy was born at 6:44pm and weighed 7.3 ounces.  She is solid beautiful black with a few white hairs on her chin like our beloved "Tiki" and a few white hairs on the bottom of both of her back paw pads like our precious "Tiara".  She has a tiny white strip down her chest like her Daddy Toby.  Both Tiki and Tiara were treasured non-provable Cockapoo members of our family who have gone on to a better place.  I cried when I saw this puppy.  She will be staying with us as our newest family member.  We lost our Tiara to a genetic heart murmur December 12, 2003.  We agreed to take Tiara as our "hospice puppy" and love her as long as she lived since she was born with a very serious genetic heart murmur rated 4 on a scale of 1 to 6 with 6 being the worst.  She lived five short but wonderful years and gave us much joy and laughter.  We miss her terribly.  We lost Tiki in February of 2000 of mass cell tumor cancer.  She was 13 years old and took part of our hearts with her when she went.  It does my heart good to see all these beautiful black Cockapoos since Tiki, Tiara and Tiki's sister and littermate Tara all were black.  My sister Cher cried when I told her about our two black female puppies in this litter.  She told me five is the number of Grace.  We've waited five years for two black female littermates and the one that looks most like Tara, Tiki and Tiara was born fifth.  God must have had a plan to heal our broken hearts when he made them.

The sixth puppy was born at 7:15pm.  He weighed in at 7.3 ounces.  Another beautiful black boy with an affinity for his Grandma's ear!  He is solid black for the most part, but his distinguishing marks are: his back left paw has three pink paw pads with a little white fur on the tip of those toes (as if he dipped the very tip of his toes on both back feet in milk).  I noticed that today 1/1/04 that one of those three pads has turned black.  I wonder if the others will too.  The rest of him is solid black and he has a curlier coat than the other black male.  That is how we can tell them apart.  Tianna did a fantastic job!!!

December 23, 2003 Tianna and the puppies had their post partum check by Dr. Bleifer and their dewclaws were removed.  According to the CCA breed standard the puppies tails are left natural they are NOT docked.  All our precious babies are doing great!  Where their dewclaws were is swabbed with Betadine two times a day for five days.

December 30, 2003 the puppies began to open their eyes!!!  They also got their first toenail trim on this day.

January 1, 2004  Happy New Year!  The puppies have their eyes open or partially open and are better able to find Tianna.  They welcome kisses from Grandma and are getting used to being loved by both canine and humans.  They are getting used to being snuggled, getting their satin soft, warm tummies kissed, and being gently handled by Josie.  Their ears are beginning to open so I suspect they are beginning to hear our human voices and their own voices as well.  They have the sweetest puppy breath... right from heaven.

January 6, 2004 (2weeks 3 days old)  Two days ago the puppies learned to sit on their fanny's with their front legs straight and the very same day they begin to walk wobbly on all four legs instead of crawling on their tummies.  They now can bark at me and wag their tiny tails when they are happy to see me or Tianna.  When I go to see them they all run to me for a hug, a kiss and a belly rub.  I have long said if I had a dime for every time a Cockapoo makes me smile I'd be a millionaire.  This is so true here.  These precious puppies are so full of joy they make my heart all warm and fuzzy inside.

January 12, 2004 (3 weeks 2 days old)  The puppies are getting their teeth.  Tori (Fifth born black girl that we are keeping.  We named her Tori.) got her fangs today!  The buff girl got her fangs yesterday.

January 17, 2004 (4 weeks old)  The puppies ate their first sold food.  They tried Eukanuba Small Breed Puppy Canned food for the first time and they liked it!  I am working overtime on clean up duty now.  Tianna said...if you're going to feed them...you get to clean up after them now.  Let me tell you, never under estimate the power of a devoted mom.  Tianna did a wonderful job on clean up the first four weeks and now it is my turn.  She is still nursing them and will continue to for anther three weeks.  I took a fecal sample into the vet today and the puppies are free of parasites.  I plan to worm them anyway tomorrow just for safe keeping and again two weeks from now.

January 24, 2004 (5 weeks old)  The puppies started eating Eukanuba Small Breed Dry Puppy Food.  They LOVE it!  They are doing much better eating it than the canned.  They have all of their fangs and all of their front teeth and their back teeth are through but still coming in.  It is amazing to me that they like this food better.  They are learning to drink water from a dish.  They are so funny and awkward and clumbsy and step in the dish more than they drink it.

January 26, 2004 (5 weeks 2 days old)  Okay, laugh at me...I made a special trip to Pets Mart today (buy stock in Pets Mart I spend a fortune there) to get a spill proof water bowl.  Guess what?  It works!!!  I got a stainless steel bowl with an edge that goes all the way to the ground at an angle and it has a black rubber base on it that keeps it from sliding around.  Now the dear wee ones can step in the water dish, but they can't knock it over any more.  They were having a ball tipping the water over and watching me clean it up.  Curly boy (sixth born black boy) made great climbing strides today.  He is going to be a rock climber when he grows up.  He has conquered climbing out of every enclosure I could create for him so I made a special trip to Home Depot today to get a piece of linoleum remnant for the kitchen floor today and I picked up an exercise pen at Pets Mart while I was there for the puppies new romping room in the kitchen.  They love to get up speed and run and slide across the floor chasing each other in the kitchen.  I now have to go downstairs with Tianna for their 2:30am  feeding.  Yawn.  But they are so adorable and so happy to see me...that I don't mind at all.

January 29, 2004 (5 1/2 weeks old)  Precious!  Precious!  They are soooo precious!  They are running and jumping and turning circles with their tiny curled up tails in the air.  They are biting each other and squealing and greeting me with barks of jubilation  and wagging tails.  They are so happy to be here on earth and they are full of COCKAPOO JOY!!!  Today they had the biggest growth spurt ever.  They gained between .15 and .25 of a pound today!  They are bigger tonight than they were this morning.  I looked down at curly boy (sixth born black boy) tonight and I just couldn't believe how much he had grown today.  Their tails are longer, their bodies are longer and their coats are longer.  It is just amazing watching the growth and the change.

Thanks and acknowledgments...

My family all witnessed the delivery (my husband Garry and three children Ryan 16, Marci 12, and Monica 9).  Special thanks to my loving and dedicated husband Garry, and my good friend Kris O'Shaughnessy who assisted during the delivery (whelping) lending extra hands to help with tying, cutting and putting Betadine on  the cords, taking pictures, lending moral support, prayers and hugs.  Thank you each and everyone.  A special thanks to Debbie Cowdrey for her wonderful friendship, dedication to the CCA American Cockapoo breed, for sharing her expertise, helping and giving accurate information every step of the way, and especially for breeding our precious Tianna.  Special thanks to Rhonda Carlson for her wisdom and support, sharing great articles on breeding, her dedication to the CCA American Cockapoo breed, and for breeding the sire to this litter "Toby Claus Anderson".  Special thanks to Linda & Kevin Anderson the owners of stud Toby Claus Anderson who went to great lengths to make this litter possible by meeting me in front of Anderson's Pea Soup in Bulleton. They have a great sense of humor.  And last but not least...thanks to Anderson's Pea Soup for not asking us to leave...when Toby and Tianna were...uh...yah...making this litter possible under the stars there.  And Linda...on second thought... maybe we should have gotten them a room.  Grin!

Our puppies are sold with a spay/neuter contract (unless they are sold specifically for breeding, meet the breed standard, pass all their health certifications, are CERF'ed annually and OFA certified at one year of age, and are breed quality).  All our puppies come with a one year guarantee that they will be free of life threatening genetic health defects or you can return your puppy for a replacement puppy, or a full refund of the purchase price.  If your family suffers from allergies and you have an allergic reaction to your puppy you can return your puppy, for a replacement puppy from another litter, or a full refund of the purchase price.

Thank you for your overwhelming support and response.
